Tricks and Treats: Safety Tips

Keep your ghosts and goblins safe

Halloween is a fun-filled holiday for kids and parents alike. However, some of the Halloween festivities pose danger for the little ones. The Lakewood Hospital ER offers the following safety tips to ensure your Halloween isn’t too scary:

  • Choose costumes that are flame-resistant
  • Choose light colored costumes and add reflective tape so children are easily seen
  • Props, such as wands or swords, should be soft and made from flexible materials
  • Avoid masks or headgear that may obstruct vision
  • Adults should accompany children trick-or-treating
  • Use a flashlight with new batteries
  • Visit homes with porch lights
  • Walk on sidewalks with lit streets
  • Inspect all treats for signs of tampering such as small pinholes, loose or torn packages and packages that appear to have been taped or glued back together
  • Dispose of loose candy or homemade treats
  • Explain to your children the difference between tricks and vandalism

We want you to have a safe and enjoyable Halloween; however, if an accident does occur and it’s an emergency, call 911. For other injuries or illnesses, remember that Lakewood Hospital’s Emergency Room is equipped to treat all patients. For more information about our ER, click here.
